Money Matters achieves new success in support of adult learners and financial literacy across Canada

Record enrollment, new communities, and new website among the November milestones reached

(Toronto, ON – November 9, 2016) – ABC Life Literacy Canada is pleased to announce that its flagship community program, Money Matters, has achieved new program milestones this November during Financial Literacy Month.

In partnership with Money Matters Founding Sponsor, TD Bank Group, this nationwide community program has made tremendous improvement to the financial literacy skills of Canadians since its debut in 2011. A record-breaking 1,000 adult learners are participating in 80 Money Matters workshops this month across the suite’s three programs, which are aimed at adult learners, Newcomers and New Canadians, and Indigenous Communities. These sessions bring together community groups from across Canada and their local TD Bank Group employees. MoneyMattersCanada.ca also launched this month with a new design and additional features. Now bilingual, the website features new practical, downloadable and easy-to-share tips and resources.

"ABC is very proud of Money Matters and these new achievements are a testament to the valued support of TD Bank Group and our dedicated network of community organizations," said Mack Rogers, Director, Community Programs for ABC Life Literacy Canada. "There is more room for program growth and ABC is committed to support every adult learner with the skills they need to live a more fully engaged life."

The issue and importance of financial literacy build on the new realities that literacy is more than reading and writing skills. Nearly 49% of adult Canadians don't have the required literacy skills to keep up with 21st century demands.

Among the lineup of special activities this month, ABC Life Literacy Canada will be taking financial literacy education best practices to the social space. A special Tweet Chat will be hosted by @ABCLifeLiteracy on November 23 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST. #FLMchat is headlined How to talk financial literacy: a conversation about spending, banking, borrowing and saving.

ABC is a member of the Financial Literacy Action Group (FLAG) that leads year-round programs, awareness and community engagement to help increase the financial literacy of Canadians.
