Ring in the New Year by improving your financial literacy





The New Year is a time for new beginnings and resolutions, and one of the best resolutions you can make for yourself and your family is to become more financially literate. Financial literacy is having the skills and confidence to set financial goals and achieve them using the tools and resources that are available to you. ABC Life Literacy Canada has created a variety of free resources for all Canadians as well as those new to Canada, such as Money Matters for Newcomers and New Canadians. ABC recommends the following financial literacy tips to start the New Year:

How one Toronto non-profit is empowering Indigenous women to manage their finances





The Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto (NWRCT) has been providing services to Aboriginal women in downtown Toronto since 1985. From its start in a basement office affectionately nicknamed “The Pit” to the spacious Victorian house that now serves as a space for Indigenous women and their children, cultural and traditional teachings are at the heart of everything that the NWRCT does.

Are you unprepared for a financial setback? You’re not alone.





Canadians are increasingly worried about their finances, and many are likely to be unprepared for an unexpected setback. A recent survey conducted by Forum Research Inc. found that only a quarter of Canadians have an emergency fund, while the Financial Planning Standards Council reports that finances are a daily concern for four in 10 Canadians.

In response to a worrisome trend toward indoor, sedentary and less active behaviour across all age groups, Canadian organizations are working to identify both causes and solutions to this growing problem. One of the most affected groups is Canadian children and youth, with physical activity levels well below the daily recommendations and screen time on the rise.
