Partnering with 11 community organizations, Drayton Valley Libraries is thrilled to have organized a FREE community event celebrating The Magic of Literacy! The Royal Canadian Legion has donated their space for the event which runs from 11 am until 2 pm. Entertainer and author, Rodzilla (Rodney Fortin) will perform a magic show and have his book available for sale, Author Chance Hansen will have a table focusing on the Magic of Reading and Writing. His books will be available for purchase. Mayor Michael Doerksen will read his favourite Dr. Seuss story. From the Magic of the Animal Kingdom to the Magic of Dr. Seuss, there will be 10 tables featuring different themes, activities and giveaways. Jacquie Jones, Independent Usborne Consultant, is hosting a Literacy Fair - proceeds will be donated (in books) to the Rotary Library! Come out for free family fun including pizza, popcorn, beverages, activities and FREE BOOKS! Morning activities are appropriate for younger children and their families. School-age children have been invited for the afternoon magic show and activities. Everyone is welcome! Children must be accompanied by an adult.

We are doing a Family Literacy Day Bingo Event which goes from January 27 until February 23rd to bring awareness to Family Literacy. All students in Grade 3 within the County of the Foothills will be coming home with a bingo card that encourages the whole family to participate in literacy activities together! If they don’t have a child in Grade 3 then they can swing by one of the libraries – High River Library, Okotoks Library or Sheep River Library – and pick up a card and get everyone in the house involved! Once they have completed their card, they drop it off at any of the 3 libraries and be entered in to win a fabulous Family Fun Pack which includes day passes to family fun facilities, board games and a $50 gift certificate towards a meal at one local restaurant!! For each line completed they will get an entry into the draws.

As a Teacher-Librarian I am setting a challenge out to all families of our students in grades 4-7 (Middle School) to engage in a family fun literacy activitity on Jan. 27. Parents are asked to send in a short video or picture showing what they are doing to celbrate this very significant event. As a part of our technology curriculum, we will make a video to share with our school community of the various ideas and activities done. All those who enter will be eligible to win a prize of a literacy prize package.

We will be setting up a story stroll at a local walking park. During this week-long event attendees will be able to read through pages of a story that will be posted along the trails. Attendees will also get a story stone to take home and use in retelling the story! This even runs from Monday, January 21st - Sunday, January 27th.

Since January 27, 2019 is on a Sunday, we will be celebrating the day on January 31 and February 1. On January 31, the event will be at Swift Current Library. On February 1, the event will be at public libraries in Ponteix and Shaunavon. At the events, on both the days, we will be inviting Grade 3 school children to attend the events and participate in arts and crafts and other activities arranged for the children. The book " Dangerous Dinosaurs" will be read. It is written by Freda Wishinski. Dr. Emily Bamforth, paleontologist at the T-Rex Centre in Eastend will be reading to the children and conducting a few activities. The event is open to the community. We hope many children will get interested in reading the other books in the series.
